New Partnership: NeuroReach Africa and the Tanzania Epilepsy Organization

NeuroReach Africa and the Tanzania Epilepsy Organization (TEO) have agreed to work together as collaborative partners.

According to WHO, up to 70% of people with epilepsy could live free of seizures with the right diagnosis and treatment. Yet in Kenya and Tanzania, myths and stigma still keep many children out of school and many families away from care. In September we took books to 54 primary schools in Kikuyu Sub-County. Nearly all the teachers we met there had never been trained on epilepsy. After our handover session, most could do the first aid steps.

Fides Uiso, who received the 2025 Ambassador for Epilepsy Award, founded TEO to end stigma and discrimination against people with epilepsy in Tanzania. TEO supports mothers and caregivers, reaches communities through outreach, trains people in seizure action plans and pushes for fairer laws.

We bring the Friends Series, our children's books on epilepsy in English and Kiswahili. We also bring a schools model that pairs the books with seizure first aid, delivered with county health teams and community health promoters.

Together we aim to:

• bring Kiswahili storybooks on epilepsy to children in Tanzanian schools • train teachers, health workers and families in seizure first aid • challenge myths and stigma in schools and communities • support mothers and caregivers • learn what works and share it across East Africa

Our first step is 100 Friends Series books for schools in Tanzania, with more to follow.

Thank you, Fides and the TEO team. We look forward to the work ahead.
